Now teachers, I know you were such big fans of the first two books in the Welcome To Our Country series by Adam Goodes, Ellie Laing and David Hardy, so I know you are going to love this and I am super excited and so privileged to be able to share it with you!

As you know there are five books in the Welcome To Our Country series, this one being the third.

Back on Country is a First Nations children’s picture book that celebrates family, Community, strength, resilience and coming home, based on the lived experiences of Adnyamathanha and Narungga man Adam Goodes and Barkindji man David Hardy.

I particularly love how this book elaborates on the importance of listening and learning from Elders and Ancestors. It celebrates family and demonstrates the important role Country plays in family. The topics explored in this text are incredibly diverse and share First Nations perspectives in ways that makes understanding big topics such as the Stolen Generations and their impacts, easy for our little ones to grasp.

Unlike the first two books in this series which were rhyming verse, Back On Country is a narrative which also gives us a great opportunity as teachers to be able to share with our students different text types and explore the reasons as to why the authors may have chosen to create this text in this way.

I would highly recommend this book for students from kindy or early childhood through to year 3 and absolutely any teacher or parent on Adnyamathanha Country or Barkindji Country.
